Our Approach to Immigration Enforcement

The ³Ô¹Ï´ó±¾Óª Police Department is committed to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for all students and employees. LUPD serves and protects our entire community.  Laws and policies in effect in Illinois, and on our campus, are designed to create an environment where our students, regardless of their status, can feel safe and secure as they pursue their educational goals knowing they are protected.

The role of police officers in Illinois in enforcing the civil portions of federal immigration law are limited by statute. The Illinois Attorney General has provided clear . As such, ³Ô¹Ï´ó±¾Óª Police officers are not authorized to enforce federal civil immigration law (LUPD Policy 417 “Immigration Violations”).

Can police officers in Illinois arrest or detain individuals based on their immigration status?

NO.


Illinois law enforcement officers can NOT detain individuals based on immigration status.

Do immigration agents have unfettered access to the ³Ô¹Ï´ó±¾Óª campuses anytime?

NO.


³Ô¹Ï´ó±¾Óª University campuses are private property and have the right to refuse access to law enforcement officers without a warrant or exigency.

Do undocumented individuals risk deportation if they report a crime to a police officer?

NO.


Illinois law enforcement agencies are REQUIRED to assist undocumented immigrant crime victims obtain specialized visas by completing necessary certification forms.

Can police officers in Illinois team up with ICE agents to arrest undocumented persons?

NO.


Police officers in IL are prohibited from assisting, supporting, or participating in federal immigration enforcement activities without a federal judicial warrant.

Are my student records protected?

YES.


Student Records are protected by the (FERPA) and may only be released under specific circumstances.

The University has specific procedures as explained in the “Front Door Policy” regarding inquiries from outside law enforcement agencies.
