Stay Warm, Flyers

Stay Warm, Flyers

Published: January 20, 2025.

As we kick off the Spring 2025 semester, we’ll return to classes during extremely cold weather. Although the cold temperatures won’t quite be cold enough to trigger a National Weather Service Cold Weather Advisory, it’s still important to take precautions to ensure you remain safe, healthy, and warm.

Consider the following cold weather tips:

  1. Wear layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing.
  2. Wear a hat that covers your ears.
  3. Wear mittens instead of gloves.
  4. Cover your mouth to protect your lungs.
  5. Wear water-repellent, tightly woven outer garments.
  6. Wear fabrics that wick away moisture.
  7. Limit outdoor exposure and go indoors frequently to warm up.

Be aware of the signs of frostbite and hypothermia, which can occur more quickly during extremely cold temperatures and wind chills.

 Signs of Frostbite:

  1. Redness, swelling, or blisters
  2. Intense pain
  3. Ice forming around the affected area
  4. Brittle skin

Signs of Hypothermia:

  1. Shivering
  2. Slurred speech
  3. Drowsiness
  4. Confusion
  5. Trouble walking
  6. Fast breathing (hyperventilation)
  7. Cold or pale skin

If you believe you’re experiencing frostbite or hypothermia, seek medical attention through an urgent care facility, the Student Wellness Center, or the many resources available through your TimelyCare account.

We hope you have a safe and successful Spring semester!
